Vienna/Tirana, 6 October 2020: Wahlbeobachtung.org, in partnership with the Albanian Young Professionals Network (YPN), has developed a workshop for young and first-time voters, which will take place between 1 and 5 December 2020. The workshop is dedicated to a young generation who is interested in learning more about elections in European comparison and wants to get actively engaged.
As a result of political disputes and compromises, an electoral reform process is taking place in Albania, while the country is in the process of joining the European Union. At the same time, civic space has been shrinking in Albania in recent years. Young voters are often not sufficiently aware of the ongoing reform processes and about their possibilities to contribute. These factors combined indicate a need for enhanced civic education and young voter motivation ahead of the next parliamentary elections scheduled for 25 April 2021.
As part of the interactive workshop, the participants will not only become familiar with theoretical concepts, but also learn about practical approaches to citizen election observation, innovative voter education, and the observation of social media during the electoral campaign. They will be supported to develop ideas for follow-up activities in order to actively contribute to voter education ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. In addition, the participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts from national and international organizations in Albania.
The workshop is based on a needs assessment mission in Albania in December 2019 and expert contributions of Election-Watch.EU to a conference of the OSCE Support to Elections in the Western Balkans in Tirana in January 2020. The project “Civic Education for Youth in Albania and the Western Balkans” was created in the framework of the Robert Bosch Foundation program Education on Europe and is supported by this foundation. Wahlbeobachtung.org and Young Professionals Network have signed a partnership agreement to implement this workshop.
