Vienna, 16 September 2024: Since Monday, 16 September 2024, the vote advice application wahlrechner.at for the 2024 Austrian National Council election is online. The wahlrechner.at was first tested during the European elections as a pilot project, where the app recorded 550,000 users.
The project, initiated by several democracy-focused NGOs, is supported both technically and content-wise by the association KohoVolit.eu, which operates the most widely used election orientation tool in Central Europe. The association wahlbeobachtung.org took the lead on content and was supported in the creation of the questions by the educational organization PolEdu – Politics & Education, the association Bizeps – Center for Independent Living, and the transparency platform Meine Abgeordneten. The target group is the general public, with a focus on first-time and young voters, as well as people with disabilities, whose concerns were addressed in the questions.
wahlrechner.at is an election orientation tool that particularly emphasizes a balance between scientific accuracy and simple language. The main aim is easy access to political content to promote informed participation in the political process.
How does wahlrechner.at work?
wahlrechner.at presents users with 42 questions, which can be answered with “For” or “Against.” Additionally, users can indicate whether a question is important to them or skip it. The users’ responses are then compared with those of the political parties, and users receive a result showing how closely their answers align with the parties. For people in a hurry, wahlrechner.at also offers an express version with 25 questions.
In addition, an experimental version of the wahlrechner.at is available. This voting calculator is a special version of the wahlrechner.at, based on real votes in the National Council. It contains 33 questions on important topics and compares users’ answers with the actual voting records of the parties currently represented in Parliament. Since the questions are based on real votes, only parties currently in Parliament are included.
