Brussels, 30 November 2023: Election-Watch.EU was invited to present at the European Day of Persons with Disability’s Panel on the Right to vote and to stand for elections – Removing
barriers for persons with disabilities in the EU parliament.
Moderated by Mr. Alejandro Moledo, Deputy Director and Head of Policy of the European
Disability Forum (EDF), the panel comprised:
Mrs. Susanna van Tonder from Luxembourg and national champion of the European Commission’s communication campaign on the Disability Rights Strategy,
Mrs. Marie-Helene Boulanger, Deputy Director on Rule of Law, Democracy and Fundamental Rights, DG JUST, European Commission,
Mr. Tom Rüütel, Estonian employer counsellor,
Hon. Domènec Ruiz Devesa, Member of the European Parliament and lead negotiator of the Electoral law reform, and
Armin Rabitsch, Election-Watch.EU,
and discussed efforts to improve inclusion and accessibility of persons with disabilities as well as difficulties and challenges faced in voting and standing as candidate in the upcoming European Parliament elections.
Mrs. Marie-Helene Boulanger referred to the European Democracy Action Plan’s Disability Strategy and announced that the European Commission will soon publish a guide on good electoral practice for persons with disabilities.
